The movie is based on the story of the Scottish writer J. M. Barrie (Johnny Depp), his platonic relationship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and his friendship with her sons: Michael, George, Jack and Peter, who inspired the famous play Peter Pan: The Boy Who Never Grew Up. After the failure of his latest play, James Barrie meets the widow Sylvia Davies and her young sons; soon, a close friendship develops between them. But Barrie's wife Mary and Sylvia's mother complain about the amount of time the writer spends with the Llewelyn Davis family. The widow's mother, Emma du Maurier, starts controlling her and her children when her daughter starts becoming weaker because of an illness. Meanwhile, Barrie writes a play inspired by the four young kids, about a boy who never grows up. Barrie's chief doubts about the succes of his play, but in the end, it becomes his best one.
